History

The area’s name originates from early colonial land grants following purchases by the New Zealand Company. Several whalers received allotments in 1847, and references to “The Whaler’s Gate” date to 1860. Barrett Road commemorates Dicky Barrett, a trader and whaler active in the Taranaki region.
