What the grades mean

Excellent and Good: rarely unsafe for swimming. Fair: usually fine, but avoid swimming after rain. Poor: often unsuitable, especially after rain, so check the latest result first.

Grades use LAWA’s method: the 95th percentile of routine enterococci results over the five summers from 2020/21 to 2024/25, with at least 50 tests (329 per 100 mL from 95 tests).

These facts say what suits each break, not whether it’s safe today. Surf breaks have rips, rocks and changing conditions. If you’re learning, surf where and when lifeguards patrol, and check the conditions yourself before going in.
Legal access isn’t always easy access: paper roads are often unformed or fenced, so leave gates as you find them.

The site connects directly to the award-winning Coastal Walkway, a 13.2-kilometre sea-edge path managed by New Plymouth District Council. This route links East End Beach with Fitzroy Beach to the east and central New Plymouth attractions to the west.

East End Beach is popular for swimming and beginner surfing due to its generally gentle wave conditions. The East End Surf Life Saving Club operates from the area and provides seasonal patrols.

Cultural and educational sites such as the Len Lye Centre and Puke Ariki Museum are a short distance away along the walkway or by road, allowing visitors to combine beach time with indoor activities.

Swimming and Water Activities

Swimming is the main draw at East End Beach. The beach experiences manageable swells, making it suitable for families and those new to the water. Surfing lessons and casual wave riding are common when conditions allow.

Water quality is tested weekly by the Taranaki Regional Council from November to March. Results are published on the LAWA website. Swimmers are advised to avoid the water for at least three days after heavy rain and to check current alerts before entering.

Beach games, sand play, and picnics are popular on the adjacent reserve. The nearby skate park adds another activity option for older children and teenagers.

Coastal Walkway Access

The Coastal Walkway provides the primary pedestrian and cycling route to East End Beach. The full path runs 13.2 kilometres along the coast, passing reserves, bridges, and other beaches. Sections near East End are flat and suitable for most fitness levels.

Walkers and cyclists can reach the beach from central New Plymouth or continue east toward Fitzroy Beach. The route offers views of the sea and opportunities to observe coastal plants and birdlife.

Facilities and Access

East End Reserve provides public toilets, outdoor showers, and a gas barbecue. Picnic tables and open space support family gatherings. Parking is available in a reserve lot, though spaces can be limited on busy summer days. Street parking nearby is restricted in some areas.

Public bus services stop within walking distance. The reserve and walkway are generally accessible, though specific wheelchair paths to the sand are limited.

Dogs are banned from East End Reserve, and from the beach from the first pedestrian access west of the surf club through to Fitzroy, from 10am to 6pm between the Saturday of Labour Weekend and the end of Easter Monday each year, and from the playground all year.
