New Plymouth Boys’ High School is a state, boys’ secondary school for Years 9 to 13 at 107 Coronation Avenue, New Plymouth. It opened in 1882 and had 1,457 students on its roll at 1 September 2026.

The Education Review Office’s latest report on the school is a School Evaluation Report from January 2026. ERO found that outcomes are improving. A large majority of Year 9 and 10 students achieve at expected levels in reading and mathematics, most students gain NCEA Levels 2 and 3, and a large majority gain Level 1.
ERO also found that Te Haumaru, the school’s learning centre, is well established and helps students with diverse learning needs plan pathways with their families, and that students feel a strong sense of belonging.
ERO also noted areas to lift. Only a small majority of Year 9 and 10 students achieve at expected levels in writing, a small majority gain University Entrance, and there are gaps in achievement between groups of students at NCEA Levels 1 and 3 and in University Entrance.
A small majority of students attend regularly, which is below the government target. The key priorities are fairer and stronger outcomes for all groups of students, better evaluation of what reduces those gaps, especially in Years 9 and 10, and improved attendance.
